Upgrading the boot drive will also actually impact general performance whereas adding an external drive will only improve file transfers. The iMac is not as hard to open up as many people seem to think. I will also vote for opening up the iMac and replacing the HDD with an SSD. Just look up how to open it up it's really not that hard and an external ssd is really not that great. If it is that thunderbolt 1 is slower than just using usb 3.0 than I would also appreciate if someone would inform me of this. I live in the US and I hope I have given any and all information needed in the previous paragraph. I need at max 500gb as I can download my pictures and old games on the hard drive. If someone could give me a link to one I would greatly appreciate it. According to my research, thunderbolt 1 is faster than usb 3.0 and so I began to look for thunderbolt 1 (enclosure?, storage device? I do not know the term and I apologize for it.) But I failed to find one. My plan is to add a external ssd but I whilst looking at the rear I/O I noticed the two thunderbolt 1 ports. It is currently equipped with a 1 terabyte 5400rpm hard drive and 8 gigabytes of 1600MHz DDR3 ram. I own a old iMac (late 2013) and I have been trying to make run faster without opening it as I have no experience in tearing down pcs or Macs and I would rather not risk my main computer.
